This is the first time this book has ever been reprinted and details all the locomotives in operation on Britain's railways during the summer of 1960, with details of each class and shed codes, divided by Region or Big Four company pre-nationalisation. This volume also includes the still significant numbers of steam locomotives that were still in existence as British Rail had just built its final steam locomotives, '9F' Evening Star, earlier that year. Within 7 years steam would disappear completely from the landscape and yet in 1960 a large proportion of the steam fleet remained intact. Also included in the reprint is the Summer 1960 Locoshed book. This part of the book lists the sheds from which each locomotive worked at the time of original publication in 1960. Together, these two volumes provide a detailed picture of Britain's railways before the mass withdrawal of steam operation.
