Details

Based on the historical photographs of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, this large-format book features photographs from a variety of sources, many of them not seen before. Opened in 1898, the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway ran for 19 miles from the North Devon coast and across challenging moorland terrain. The unusually narrow gauge of 1ft 11½in was chosen to ease the railway's sinuous passage across the wilds of Exmoor. However, the line's first life was to be short-lived. The Southern Railway Company took over the near-bankrupt line in 1923, closed it only 12 years later and put its rolling stock and equipment up for auction. The line was not forgotten. A volunteer association was set up in 1979, acquired Woody Bay station in 1995 and re-opened a short section of the route in 2004. There are ambitious plans to extend the line eventually to both Barnstaple and Lynton, allowing visitors to reach the resort by train once again.
