| George Toms worked at Brush in Loughborough for almost 50 years and in his latest book he chronicles, in great detail and with first-hand knowledge, the factory's output of diesel and diesel electric locomotives. His book has been written to portray the historical side of Brush locomotives produced from 1940 and tells the story of what Brush did, and what happened to the locomotives in general terms after delivery. The Brush register of locomotives is followed in approximate chronological order where possible and in doing so Brush-built locomotives, some locomotives for which Brush supplied equipment, sub-contracted examples and joint Brush-Bagnall efforts are all included. From the 1950s through to the 1990s Brush has supplied many items of electrical equipment to British Rail, other home railways and overseas railways, in addition to building complete locomotives. Encompassing small shunting locomotives right through to the main line Type 2s and Type 4s, not forgetting Falcon and Kestrel, export contracts for Ceylon and Russia, the book will have wide appeal. Fully illustrated and including numerous tables of data for the various types built, the work is further enhanced by the inclusion of publicity material. Volume one is available now and takes the story to the British Rail class 56 machines. A second volume will bring the story up-to-date and is expected to be published in mid 2010; these two books will form the definitive record of this well-known and respected builder. |
