In the 150 years since the first section of the future London Underground network was opened, the history of the network has been one of almost constant expansion with the surface, sub-surface and tube lines all seeing considerable growth over the years. There have, however, been a number of lines and stations that have been closed. These abandonments have occurred for economic, political and operational reasons when stations were deemed to be too close to each other which resulted in the Greater London area and the Home Counties possessing a fascinating heritage of abandoned Underground stations and lines. Where these stations were underground, such as at Aldwych, much of the structure survives below the street and to varying degrees above ground level as well. For those lines and stations on the surface, such as the original Metropolitan beyond Aylesbury, traces are often more difficult to find.
