The author relates his memories and experiences from being a schoolboy during the Second World War, starting as a porter at Acocks Green station in 1949, and then starting a career at Tyseley engine sheds as a cleaner and later as a fireman. Then through National Service and back to the railways continuing as a fireman through the grades until promotion to a driver in the late days of steam traction. A transfer to Saltley depot then came about and driving diesels through to retirement in 1993. A fascinating and absorbing story of railway characters and the major changes that came about during this period.
