The single track lines from Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth and from Monmouth to Little Mill Junction (near Pontypool) were classic rural Great Western branch lines. The first line was built by the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk & Pontypool Railway, in 1857, and the section from Monmouth to Ross was built by the Ross & Monmouth Railway and opened on 4th August 1873. The Great Western, which absorbed both undertakings, regarded these lines as one continuous route. This book now looks at this route and begins with a historical study of the two original companies and then the operation of the line under the Great Western. The next chapters describe the stations and infrastructure in detail, while the final chapter looks at the decline of the route after World War II. 200 pages, softback, with 152 black & white photos.
