Aberdeen Corporation Tramway opened on 27 August 1898 and until it closed in May 1958 was the most northerly municipal tramway in the United Kingdom. However, it was not the only tramway in Aberdeenshire. The Cruden Bay Tramway, for instance, the northernmost tramway service in the UK, was set up by the Great North of Scotland Railway in 1899 to connect the Cruden Bay Hotel with the company's local railway station, which it did until the hotel was requisitioned for military use in 1940. In this wonderful collection of images, Mike Mitchell shows the impact of this new form of transportation on the people of Aberdeenshire, giving an insight into the social history of the area.
