Since the introduction of diesel locomotives in the late 1950s for main line duties, British Rail standardisation on mainly plain green and blue rather lacked imagination. The two tone green applied to some classes was pleasing, and the Western region maroon looked fine on the Warships and Westerns. In 1978 the BR board decided that an image change for the locomotives was overdue, and so class 56 No 56036 appeared with the large logo and numbers with full wrap round yellow cab fronts. This simple alteration transformed the look of the locomotives and, in spite of all the new colour schemes that have followed in recent years, for the author it is one of the best. He illustrates it in this full colour album.
