She was the vital other half to the greatest success story in transatlantic passenger service by an ocean liner. Without her the dream of Cunard Chairman Sir Percy Bates to establish a two-ship, weekly express passenger and mail run between the old and new worlds would never have come to fruition. The RMS Queen Elizabeth and the RMS Queen Mary were not just individual success stories in their own right, both in times of war and peace, they co-existed as a skilfully run team. The running mates - often called sister ships despite their obvious external and internal disparities, worked tirelessly in unison, to give their owner Cunard the respected and revered name in passenger ships it has to this day. For that reason alone, both ships deserve equal billing. Somehow, and quite unnecessarily, the Queen Elizabeth has played second fiddle to the Queen Mary in terms of popularity. The fact that the Queen Mary is, thankfully, still with us today, probably has a lot to do with stealing the 'Lizzie's' limelight.
