Snape Branch

The internationally famous Aldeburgh Arts Festival held annually at Snape, would probably not have evolved if Newson Garrett had not taken over the area of huts at the navigable head of the River Alde in the 1840s and developed the site into a vast malting complex. Initially he relied on water and primitive road transport but in 1859 a branch line was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway from Snape Jnc to Snape. For just over 100 years the ECR, GER, LNER and finally BR operated a weekday goods service to serve the maltings and the surrounding area. Now the well known author, Peter Paye, relates in detail the history and operation of this fascinating branch line.
