Buses of South Wessex - The Last 60 Years

This book takes us back in time to track the fortune or otherwise of buses in the Weymouth, Dorchester and Swanage area of Dorset or ‘South Wessex’. It looks in detail at the three former Tilling Group operators of Southern National, Hants & Dorset and Wilts & Dorset and follows their progress in to the National Bus Company, company reorganisations, takeovers and ultimately back into the private sector. On the way they faced competition after Deregulation in 1986 and none more so than in Weymouth – in fact competition started in Weymouth four years earlier in 1982! It looks at the independent operators who challenged the incumbent operators who came and went during the span of this book. It is not a fleet history but instead concentrates on the operational aspect of the businesses. There are many tables, maps, car & crew schedules and hundreds of photographs which try to cover and explain the main events as clearly as possible across 27 chapters.
