Like other municipal towns across the nation, Croydon’s public transport developed locally as businesses strived to create a market and serve the local community. Horse-driven coaches gave way to more efficient motor engines and electrically powered trolleybuses. The canal network, intended to spread out across the country, was superseded by the railways, whose owners were keen to remove the competition. As each locality connected to the next, ushering in a new era of communication and progress, the transport that served villages and towns began to link up into a network of fast and efficient options, each providing different levels of convenience and comfort for the traveller.
