Details

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) opened for passenger service on 31st August 1987 and this book is published as it enters its 40th year of operation. This landmark anniversary coincided with the rollout of a brand-new fleet of 54 walk-through, air-conditioned trains manufactured by CAF in northern Spain at a total cost of almost one billion pounds. The story of the railway is told from all aspects, including planning, building, ownership, operation, upgrading, train development, line extensions and station design. It covers the transformation from a relatively small operation to a railway that now very successfully serves a much greater market than at first had been envisaged. The railway has been key in the transformation of the Docklands area from a partly derelict wasteland into a thriving new district of the capital.
