Details
This book describes the origin and promotion of the separate railways constructed to Withernsea and Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire. There was both opposition and support for the railways when they were initially promoted, and the book describes the struggles during their early independent days. Both railways were subsequently absorbed into the North Eastern Railway, and in due course formed part of the London & North Eastern Railway and British Railways. The layout and history of each of the stations on the railways is described and illustrated, along with staffing, signalling and the operation of passenger and freight trains from their opening through to their closure. The Victoria Dock Branch in Hull is covered, and the book details how the railways to Withernsea and Hornsea operated in conjunction with that branch.
