Details
This companion large format volume to Served by Southdown includes a collection of top quality photos and detailed captions of the buses operated by BH&D and Brighton Corporation between 1950 and 1971. The period covered was shaped by a series of worldwide events, national legislation, local politics and technical evolution that affected how the local buses were operated. Further major changes would also follow thereafter. During the first part of the period under review, until 1961, there was in place an operating agreement made just prior to the Second World War between BH&D and BCT, where the Corporation trams were replaced with trolleybuses and services, running costs and receipts were shared to an agreed percentage. Buses then replaced trolleybuses in two stages, in 1959 and 1961, after which latter date there was a similar tripartite agreement taking in the local Southdown services and expanding the boundaries of the BH&D and BCT operating area. A different world brought back to life in pictures.
