The railway scene in eastern England changed little until the widespread cuts of Dr Beeching and others from 1959 onwards. Vast swathes of the area are now denied access to what had once been local railways consequent upon the wholesale culling of branch, secondary and cross-country routes all of which failed to be saved by modern diesel traction. It was a case of too little - too late and as such images of diesels working short trains on the counties quaint county lines came and went within a few short years. Fortunately, photographers like Dick Riley and Dr Ian C Allen were on hand to record this brief period in history now vividly brought back to life by Alan Butcher in a book covering two distinct yet conjoined parts of history, early diesels, and long closed lines. 112 pages softback well-illustrated.
