GWR's Swindon works were world famous, primarily as the place of manufacture of its magnificent fleet of steam locomotives, including the well-known Star, Castle, and King class express locomotives. In fact, Swindon was the largest single asset of the Great Western, producing practically everything the railway required, all to a magnificently high standard of craftsmanship. This book tells the story of the engineering works over its entire existence, detailing the growth of the establishment, its workforce, the development and production of locomotives and rolling stock, with the manufacturing processes employed. This book grew from a paper presented by the author at the 125th anniversary celebrations of Swindon Works in 1968, subsequently being published over ten years ago to become the classic reference and record of this best known of railway workshops. After many years of being unavailable it is now re-issued and includes additional information on the subsequent, and unfortunate, fate of the premises.
