Joseph Locke Civil Engineer & Railway Builder
£25.00
Most historians recognise the work of three engineers as being the men who developed the railways from slow, lumbering colliery lines into fast, inner-city routes. Two are very well known: Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The third was Joseph Locke, who should be recognised for having made a contribution just as great as that of the other two. This book, over its 184 pages looks to tell the reader the history of Joseph Locke and his family. Locke was a civil engineer and railway builder having taken up an apprenticeship with family friend, George Stephenson, after he graduated from Barnsley grammar school. His work was so renowned that during the peak of his career he was in high demand from central Europe. He completed routes in France, the Netherlands and Spain before passing away at the age of fifty-five in 1860.
