On 1 March 1938, Manchester joined the ranks of Britain's trolleybus operators when the Ashton Old Road route was energised. Further routes were converted although World War 2 delayed the final tramway conversions. Neighbouring Ashton had been an enthusiastic trolleybus operator from the mid-1920s, with a route network which became closely interlinked with that of Manchester, with joint services between the two. Although both operators acquired new vehicles as late as 1956, by then trolleybuses were going out of favour and operations ceased at the end of 1966.
