Almost exactly halfway between Dublin and Belfast, the two principal cities in Ireland, Dundalk has been an important commercial centre and harbour for hundreds of years. Its geographical position has given it a pivotal role in Irish history as a bridging place between North and South and the ruins of the 12th century fortress around which the community grew up can still be seen today. These photographs, taken in the early 20th century highlight a lively and dynamic community and showcase the many fine buildings in the town. In its heyday, Blackrock had six hotels and over 40 lodging houses where holiday makers from all over Ireland and Scotland came to holiday and enjoy the heated sea-water baths and the many forms of entertainment available along the front, including a Hungarian dancing bear.
