In this A4 softback publication from Booklaw, the author, Bill Taylor, takes a look at the Great Northern Railway. He focuses on the Leen Valley Extension that ran between Kirkby-in Ashfield and Shirebrook. So called because it was a continuation of the line constructed by the Great Northern Railway from the outskirts of Nottingham up the Valley of the River Leen to tap the lucrative traffic offered by no less than ten coal mines as far north as Newstead. The Leen Valley Extension was about ten miles long and ran from Kirkby South Junction, just north of the high ground referred to by way of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Skegby, Pleasley and Shirebrook before joining what was then Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway.
