This book moves across South Wales from east to west. It begins at Abergavenny in 1957 and concludes at Fishguard with the last BR steam visit during 1965. Many long-closed railways, branch lines, plus some industrial locations are visited. These include, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, the Vale of Neath line, Crumlin viaduct, Walnut Tree viaduct, the Brecon & Merthyr route, Barry pier, Cowbridge, Treherbert, Cymmer Afan, the ex-Neath & Brecon Railway, Swansea Victoria, and Carmarthen. Steam is the predominant motive power, but a highlight is coverage of the Swansea & Mumbles Railway, colour images of this much missed tramway operated by electric traction are not common, yet there are nine, plus six monochrome images. Most of the photographs, a mixture of black & white and colour, have never previously been published. All were taken by the author, his father, and their friends Dennis Bath, Alan Maund, and Ellis James-Robertson; extensive and informative commentaries accompany the photographs.
