The ninth in the popular Bradshaw's Guide series looks at Robert Stephenson's historic London to Birmingham Railway, which starts at Euston station, London, and concludes at the old Curzon Street station in Birmingham. Opened in 1838 it was the first major railway in the UK. The 112-mile line became part of the L&NWR in 1846 and remains a key part in the West Coast Main Line. Consequently parts of the line, most notably the Euston terminus, are earmarked for incorporation within the controversial HS2 high-speed London-Birmingham scheme. Notable construction works included the Camden incline to Primrose Hill, the Tring and Blisworth cuttings, the Wolverhampton embankment and the troublesome Kilsby Tunnel in Northamptonshire.
