This latest volume in the Classic Diesels series features the route (which varied over the years) through the scenic grandeur of the West Highlands to Oban, from where many of the islands could be reached. The author first made the journey in 1978 and returned many times with “the mountains and the lochs never failing to lose their charm". Diesel locomotives first encroached in 1961 with temperamental Class 21s. Classes 20, 25 and 27 followed and then Class 37s monopolised the lines in the 1980s until 1989 when Class 156 Super Sprinters took over. As always with Tom's books nice contextual photographs are accompanied by appropriately detailed captions. Locations included are Crianlarich, Tyndrum Lower, Dalmuir, Dumbarton, Helensburgh, Arrochar & Tarbet, Dalmally, Loch Awe, Taynuilt, Connel Ferry and Oban.
