The North British route from Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed opened in 1846 and today is part of the electrified East Coast Main Line. A number of branch lines radiated from it and served the golfing resort of Gullane, also Haddington the former county town of Haddingtonshire, plus the coal mining area of Tranent which was once linked to Cockenzie by Scotland's oldest wagonway. Its involvement in the Jacobite Rebellion saw it become the first railway to be used for military purposes. This book also includes the Gullane, Haddington, Tranent, Musselburgh and Fisherrow branches.
