Details

This new book covers the history of the Caledonian Railway's steam sheds in Carlisle including West Walls and Etterby, later renamed Kingmoor. Details are given of the locomotives based and serviced at the sheds and of the primary trains on which they were used. The Caledonian sheds originally provided motive power over the Caledonian's lines north from Carlisle. Grouping saw rationalisation of some smaller sheds in Carlisle and the extension of services using Kingmoor locomotives to cover LMS lines both north and south of the Border City. We see how Kingmoor then handled traffic following nationalisation through to closure at the end of 1967. Special focus is given to the impacts of both first and second world wars on the demands on the railway and its locomotives. The book is richly illustrated with photos primarily from the Author's collection and the CRA photo archive.
