Details

The most southerly of the East Midland counties, Leicestershire was mostly agricultural although the Industrial Revolution was felt around Leicester and Loughborough and towards the Trent, with coal mining and brick, tile and pipe manufacture. The railways helped these industries expand and this expansion allowed for the provision of passenger services connecting the East Midlands with the West Midlands and London. While the through routes survive, dozens of stations have closed such as the ones featured in this feast of vintage photographs and vital statistics, names like Kirkby Muxloe, Broughton Aastley, Ullesthorpe, Shepshed, Heather & Ibstock, John O' Gaunt & more.
