The 1970s were a relatively quiet decade for Britain’s railways following the tremendous upheavals of the 1960s. Here, is a book that takes the reader back in time when locomotives ran round their trains at their destination in order to return to their place of origin and when semaphore signalling was still in place at many locations. The reader is taken on a photographic journey the length and breadth of Scotland in fair weather and foul, from the industrial areas of the Forth/Clyde valley to the open vastness of Caithness. Occasionally we get a glimpse of stations and lines that were abandoned long ago and also illustrated are places as they looked before the massive electrification project of the 1990s transformed them forever. Here then is a volume graphically showing railway operations in the immediate two decades before they were taken out of the Public Sector.
