North Wales Rail Scene: 1970s-1990s

North Wales has some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in the British Isles, ranging from the Cambrian coast and Holyhead in the west to Wrexham in the east. Looking out of the carriage window with the Irish sea nearly touching the rails, the green and tranquil Conwy Valley contrasts with the dark mountains of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The images in this book covers two decades from the late 1970s to the late 1990s and captures some of the locomotives and DMUs that worked in the region during this time, from the humble Class 01 at Holyhead Breakwater shed to the first working of a Class 66 at Penmaenmawr. HST workings also feature here. To those who know the area and those who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting, this book presents a nostalgic look into a past era where locomotive haulage and semaphore signals were still the order of the day.
