Worksop has always been an important centre for the railway, ever since the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway arrived in the town in 1849. Situated 15 miles from both Sheffield and Doncaster, and 25 miles from Nottingham, Worksop was served by both the Great Central and Midland Railways in the days of steam, and in later years became the focal point of the region’s coal traffic, servicing the many collieries and industry in the area. This second takes a detailed look at the former Midland Railway line between Worksop and Mansfield, along with the connecting MR branch lines and former collieries along the route. It covers the period before, during and after closure of the main line to passengers under Beeching, freight operations and reopening as the Robin Hood Line in the 1990s, along with the rise and fall of the branch lines. Author Chris Booth worked as a signaller at Worksop for over 40 years and has drawn on extensive research and his own unique insight to produce this volume.
