The author has previously produced five similarly sized histories of the big five railway companies that worked in Scotland prior to 1923 and so those books deal with the period up until then. In 1923 Britain's many railway companies were amalgamated, in an event called the Grouping, into four new companies. Two of these, the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) operated in Scotland. In 1947 it all took another step when four post-1923 Grouping companies were merged to form the completely nationalised British Railways. Between 1923 and the end of 2016, a lot happened on Scottish Railways including the Second World War, the infamous Beeching cuts of the 1960s, 1990s privatisation and how the railways have fared since. This post-Grouping period in Scottish railway history has not been analysed in this depth up until now so the book fills a gap in the market. Hardback and in full colour it has maps, useful appendices, sources list and an index.
