Tom Heavyside spent much of the 1970s driving hundreds of miles across the country to photograph the majestic Deltics, the diesel-electric locomotives that were a familiar sight on British Railway's East Coast main line for 20 years from 1961 and the quintessential railway engine of that era. Predecessors of the Inter-City 125 high speed trains, the Deltics recorded some of the fastest times ever seen on Britain's railways. No locomotives had ever been worked so hard or so intensively to win their place in railway history.
