R C ‘Dick’ Riley is often thought of as a steam man, and indeed the majority of his colour archive was taken during the time steam was dominant. However, unlike others he also embraced the change to modern traction as it occurred and he would aim his camera at the new ‘boxes on wheels’ with as much skill and care as he did with steam. We are fortunate that in so doing he captured many of the early types diesel and electric both at work and on shed – or should that perhaps be stabling point – and sometimes in their original liveries. The result is the transition from steam is now available to view in Dick’s inimitable style. This book has captions written by modern devotee Andrew Royle, who brings out the detail of both the obvious and often the not so obvious. Diesel and electric multiple units are also represented in this quality selection.
