Sheffield towards Manchester

The route dates from the dawn of the railway age and was soon busy with coal traffic in particular. For this purpose, it became an early candidate for electrification, using a 1500v DC system which was to become unusual in the UK - it did not extend beyond the two cities. Most of the route closed in 1981, but the fascinating evidence of its life in scenic joys is very evident within these pages.
