The Caledonian was always intended to be Scotland's greatest railway, but at the beginning it struggled to realise its ambition to own the main lines between Carlisle, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Beset by financial problems and a dispute over its route the company almost went tinder, but by the end of the 19th century it had grown to be Scotland's biggest limited company and its blue engines could be seen from Aberdeen to Stranraer. In this, the first proper history of the Caledonian Railway to be published, historian David Ross has traced the company's development using primary sources. The text is complemented with many previously unseen contemporary images and system maps. 252 pages, hardback 160 illustrations.
