Details
This story of the company and antecedent companies and associate interests has never been told in full before. It is an interesting and exciting story of which Tynesiders, Teessiders, and the people of both Sunderland and Hartlepool are deservedly proud. It includes many excellent colour and black/white illustrations. The terms for the newly created Tyne-Tees Steam Shipping Company were agreed in October 1903 by the respective Chairmen from the Tyne Steam Shipping Company, the Tees Union Shipping Company and Furness Withy & Company. The merger of the Tyne and Tees companies with Christopher Furness' Hartlepool to London coastal interest placed the Tyne-Tees Steam Shipping Company in a strong position to compete with others on its passenger and cargo services to London, and near continental ports. Tyne-Tees withdrew from passenger carrying with the declaration of World War II in 1939.
