South Yorkshire's Transport
South Yorkshire's Transport
Details
When SYPTE was formed in 1974 the opportunity was taken to improve the quality and reliability of the bus services on offer. A concerted programme of recruitment and vehicle replacement resulted in passenger carrying figures steadily increasing, against the national trend and alone among the PTEs. The famous low fare policy further enhanced this trend and was only brought to an end as a result of Bromley Tories opposing Ken Livingstone's cheap-fares policy in London. Fourteen chapters plus appendices cover policy, bus operations and engineering, NBC, independents, train services, deregulation, detailed services changes and Supertram. A splendidly-presented record of a political hot potato.
