The West Highland Extension was approved in 1894 to provide a connection to the West Highland Line for the fishing industry on Scotland's west coast. Initially intended to run the shorter distance to Roshven on Loch Ailort, the line was diverted to Mallaig instead. Construction began in 1897 and the line began to operate in 1901. Now a major tourist attraction, the Jacobite steam service runs from Fort William to Mallaig during the summer months. Crossing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, the line passes the famous White Sands of Morar and gives wonderful views of the dramatic north-western coastline and the islands of Rhum, Eigg, Muck and Canna as it makes its way to Mallaig.
