Details

Swindon was but a small Wiltshire village until the coming of the Great Western Railway. Here Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Daniel Gooch decided on building their locomotive works which grew and grew to become at one time the largest covered workshop in the world. The products of Swindon are renowned the world over but we must also not forget the social side with the ‘Railway Village’ and medical facilities that were later used as part of the blueprint for the National Health Service.
